80 needy families given a year’s worth of household necessities

The drive is part of a charity initiative organised by Mediacorp as a way of giving back to the less fortunate, as it celebrates 80 years of radio broadcasting in Singapore.

SINGAPORE: Eighty needy families will be able to start the year on a better footing, now that they have been provided with household necessities for an entire year. The drive, which was part of the Radio Gives Back charity initiative organised by Mediacorp, was held on Saturday (Feb 6) at Marsiling Road.

The initiative was first launched in 2011 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of radio broadcasting in Singapore, as a way of giving back to the less fortunate. It was brought back this year as part of Mediacorp’s Radio 80 celebrations.

The families received food items like rice and Milo powder from Ms Debra Soon, chairperson for the Radio 80 Committee, together with radio deejays from Class 95, Gold 905, 987FM, 938LIVE, LOVE 97.2FM, YES 933 and Capital 95.8FM.

“It’s something for us to give back to society and today, radio is still as effective as it was 80 years ago,” said Ms Soon. “It’s local, relevant and authentic, and it’s our responsibility as owners of radio to use the platform for good and to help society.”

The initiative is supported by sponsoring partners, Daikin Airconditioning (Singapore), Chan Brothers Travel and Harvey Norman.
